Hypertension management

High blood pressure: Knowing your numbers

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, usually has no symptoms. However, if left untreated, it significantly increases your risk of life-threatening conditions.

Why your blood pressure matters

Around 1 in 3 adults in the UK have high blood pressure, but many do not know it. It is a leading cause of:

  • Heart attacks and strokes (associated with 50% of cases)
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart failure
  • Vascular dementia

The good news: Reducing your blood pressure by even a small amount can significantly lower these risks.

Manage your blood pressure from home

We offer a service called BP@Home using the Luscii app. This allows you to take your readings at home and share them directly with your clinical team, saving you trips to the surgery.

Tips for accurate readings

To get an accurate measurement, it is important to be relaxed.

  • Avoid caffeine or smoking 30 minutes before.
  • Sit still and quiet for 5 minutes before taking the reading.
  • Do not take your blood pressure if you are feeling stressed, in pain, or in a hurry.
